The other day, while scrolling through the recent work of many photojournalist friends, I realized something. The lefty protestors of the last several years are really, genuinely ugly, and they seem to want to be. Of course that’s not everything, as you say in this essay, but it’s really striking how utterly lacking the entire 2020s progressive movement is in anything even approaching an aesthetic sensibility. One might think they at least would think to sell themselves on looking cool? Apparently not

So agree. And the more zealous, the less aesthetically pleasing. I’m getting heat for, as one reader put it, “giving fashion advice to people with humanity.” It’s not meant to be bitchy, but rather—what’s the word—“helpful”… doesn’t sound exactly right. It’s just… where does your life lead when you’re part of a bedraggled mob. I’m guessing ‘nowhere good.’ It’s such a jungle out there. It’s not the 80s anymore. Also, what’s wrong with beauty?

“People with humanity” hahahahaha. These idiots are the quintessential examples of “lack of humanity.” How about they go out, get a job, and produce something. It’s easy to destroy things, any inhumane idiot can do so. Very hard to build something - it takes hard work, commitment, patience and all the other virtues that these losers lack. These young adults are anti-human: climate change, Palestine (terrorist), censorship, etc. I hope they see the light at some point, but judging by one of your readers comments, not all find common sense and decency.

It’s almost creepy how you can predict where they’ll land on any given issue. Like Greta Thunberg. It’s hard-coded into her programming. It’s all fake humanity and people who empathize with their fake humanity don’t care about these zoomers at all. If they cared, they’d tell them to do the things that statistically make people happy. Spoiler alert: the list doesn’t include trespassing, sleeping in a tent and getting expelled.

And they want others to pay for their food and drink, cuz just can’t go to the cafeteria already paid for, wha, wha, wha😭

Always ridiculous, because it’s not fashion advice. The way they present themselves is directly related to the effects of their actions and the work they do. Political protestors make every space they enter disgusting. The environmentalist ones dream of sprawling cities and equally expansive fields of metallic panels or gargantuan imposing windmills to power them. Social issue weirdos go out of their way to present themselves as freaks (and proudly claim the term). It seems to suggest that what’s wrong with beauty, for them, is that it simply is not compatible with their ideology or worldview. And yet reality, the created world, human life is beautiful. One then wonders why they’re afraid of the term.

Antifa, the most extreme among them, are absolutely filthy beasts. I read an account of an apostate who hung out in an Antifa flophouse in Seattle. While getting the tour, he was informed that a “sex worker” occupied one of the rooms and asked really aggressively if he had any objection to her plying her trade there. There’s also this ex SJW on Twitter who did a full reversion to normal… she was fat, blue-haired, septum ring, street urchin clothes, the works. This look got her so much validation on social media from her peers. When she grew her hair, restored its normal colour, got fit, lost the hideous piercings, she got nothing but hate. It kind of makes me shudder a little to think about it. Something very diabolical there.

They have no humanity. Their outward appearance actually perfectly personifies the ugliness with which they are inside. Supporting hamas is NOT a humanitarian or just cause. It's evil.

Homeliness isn't merely an oddly incidental correlation with Leftism; it's a feature. For decades I've noticed that I normally cringe when I see a progressive woman. And this led me to wander into believing in a "cause and effect" where leftists and physical attractiveness are concerned.

It seems to me that around the time an adolescent hits puberty she begins to engage in rigorous self-assessment vis a vis her physical appearance. And as any man knows from experience, women are, as a general proposition, merciless critics of themselves. And at the age of 13 or 14, when they hate what they see in the mirror, a good deal of them (thankfully) take comfort in knowing that a few more years will solve everything but the rest just give up and decide, then and there, to be resentful and bitter about the unfortunate genetic hand they've been dealt. And that bitterness metastasizes into a loathing of anything good, anything lovely, and anything that works.

Sound familiar? That bitterness, that desire to destroy everything which appears beautiful or attractive to others, explains why the Left, dominated by women, is a movement whose overarching goal is essentially destruction.

Leftism never offers attainable or remotely coherent solutions to the problems inherent in mortal existence. They have none.

They don't know where to even begin after successfully destroying that which, in spite of its flaws, once functioned. The history of the 20th century is scattered with the global Left's debris.

I know this is a rather robust generalization, and there are plenty of outliers to all generalizations. But I can't think of any other reason why Leftists are far less attractive than conservatives.

Decades of unhappiness and righteous anger are hard on the body, the soul and the mind.

It’s kind of depressing as you describe it. But I think it’s true. I used to be a leftist and though I like to attribute many reasons for what red-pilled me, I think the beauty of things snapped me out of it more than anything. Being on the left made it feel like you weren’t supposed to experience or appreciate beauty.

The “Acquarian Generation” had the draft, the win-less Viet Nam war, couldn’t vote til 21, etc. Also extremely creative, especially musically. Give these wussies the same - draft them all, every last 58 genders, to Gaza and Ukraine and don’t let them vote until age 21.

Wrong, Cape. 64 genders. At least in California, New York and Illinois. 58? That would be Colorado.

Thanks for this clever and acerbic post. You've ID'd the ridiculousness of this perfectly. Unfortunately, there are two issues: 1) Parents still want their kids to have the cache of a piece of paper from one of these stupid places. Until everyone wants to go to UNC-Chapel Hill (read - until these poison Ivies start really losing money or Qatar stops funding them) the administrators won't grow a set; 2) Many adults (professors, journalists etc.) want kids to like them and want to be seen as cool so they repeat the same foolishness. They scream the word "Zionist" using swear words as adjectives, adverbs and nouns. It brings no one to the negotiating table, it brings no cease-fire. It brings no resolution. It only brings more anger which means more people will get killed on both sides. And thusly we are more polarized again.

You are so right! My teenager is starting his carpentry apprenticeship straight out of high school and my husband still has all kinds of reservations. He can’t get out of this 20th century mindset that everyone has to go to college. He’ll be making 60 k a year for the first year with no tuition fees. They literally buy his boots!

Your son can take his paid-for car to his tax supported library to check out books in all of the important subjects they used to discuss in college. He can settle in to his paid-for house, by his paid-for fireplace and when he decides he'd like to go out to dinner, he can get waited on by someone who has a gender studies degree from Harvard.😂 Bravo for your son.

PS - I forgot...he won't come home screaming that the two of you are horrible hetero-normative, white 'conservatives'. He might also have a real shot at the end of 6 or 7 years to be smart enough to run his own construction company because he will have real skills that people want to pay for.

I haven't been in an airport or flown since Spring 2019. I imagine what you're describing re: fellow travelers is what I experience visiting my local Wally-world: fat women (any race) with indecipherable tattoos (from a safe distance) revealed by the bare minimum in clothing, i. e. tank tops revealing bra straps and short, crotch-grabbing shorts or fuzzy black leggings. Hair pulled back in a knot. Usually, there is a small child with the person, looking appropriately childlike. I wonder, does the mother dress like this when she goes into school for a teacher's conference?

There’s all this, yes. Another travel trend is younger women in skin-tight spandex body suits. I don’t get it at all. I’ve also seen men and women in matching track suits, which is kinda funny. Me, still old school, still dress up a little 🤷‍♀️

My only minor quibble is with the Aquarian generation. They definitely had some radicals with panache! More than now, no doubt

But when you really look back at the film there were a lot of dirty sleaze-o's around then too. As then Governor Reagan said "A hippie is someone who looks like Tarzan, walks like Jane, and smells like Cheetah." Whatever you think about him otherwise he was right on that (imho).

My fave movie of the past 5 yrs. I'm 79 yrs old, was a Navy wife -- yes, that's what we were called before the Navy went co-ed on the ships -- and remember that "era" (sorry, Taylor Swift) like it was yesterday. So glad I was young then and not today.

I literally just saw it and actually I kinda couldn't believe the hippie bashing. I mean, I'm all for it. But I wasn't expecting it. When DiCaprio kept insulting them my wife kept saying "Omg that's you."

(I was kinda "meh" on the movie as a whole. It was ok but it never really felt like it clicked, to me. But I may have gone in with too high expectations.)

I got caught up in the backstory… which was Manson pimping underage girls to hotshot directors. New divorce laws had led to a spate of divorce laws and ripped all these nuclear families apart. The fallout was these young runaways pouring into Hollywood and parasite men hanging around bus stations, waiting to exploit them. Which is what made Brad Pitt’s character so great.

Semi tangential but about 60's radical on the other coast, in NYC: There's a book called "Please Kill Me" the main story of which is a punk rock oral history. But I mention it because it starts in the late 60's as all these future New York Dolls and Ramones and stuff are bumming around NYC and the utter collapse the hippies participate in. Basically how quickly Turn on and Free Love became "Get your hands off my heroin and my woman but I'll entertain selling either." Anyway you might want to check it out sometime. Especially if you like the music. If not, the social history in the first quarter or so of the book is interesting.

Standing up to the dimwittery is a terror threat and new laws are continually being made daily to enforced and quash the sane. If we don’t stand up to this insanity we will become like the nation of Iranians who have been controlled for decades by a corrupt illegitimate government. We are already in a chokehold by our so called Democracies who accuse those that do stand against them as anti Democracy. Yes 1984 in 2024. Yes. And further to that, someone said iPad ad was like a bookend on the original 1984 ad, conceived with Jobs in charge. That ad encouraged independent, creative thinking. This ad is the opposite. It says ‘crush independent thinking’ and ‘you don’t need anything… just us.’ Very Stalinist/Marxist in the vein of ‘you only need the state.’ It raises my blood pressure just thinking about it. Jobs would have fired whoever came to him with the idea. Never would have been shipped.
